LifePump by Design Outreach in Shamutinta

Did we mention Day by De will be featured on the Armed & Generous podcast? More on that later. Through this connection, we were introduced to the nonprofit featured on the first episode of Armed & Generous - Design Outreach, creator of the LifePump. These pumps provide reliable and clean water to remote villages in southern Africa.

We began our September 2022 Zambia trip with a visit to a village in Chongwe to see a LifePump in action and meet with both the villagers and local Design Outreach team. Setting off for the Village of Shamutinta, we met with Moonga Chizela, a LifePump project manager based in Malawi who happened to be working locally around Lusaka. This village is a recent beneficiary of Design Outreach’s LifePump.

These pumps are robust, ergonomic, and efficient hand pumps and include telemetry to communicate via Wi-Fi with the LifePump Dashboard that continuously monitors the operational condition of every LifePump. Users operate the LifePump by simply spinning the stainless steel handles with their hands. It was reported to be much more comfortable and efficient than the Indian Mark II hand pumps which require a less fluid up-and-down motion. In the Chongwe area alone, Design Outreach donates and manages hundreds of these LifePumps.

We are inspired by Design Outreach’s innovative work with the LifePump and are thrilled to have seen it firsthand. To learn more about Design Outreach click here: https://doutreach.org/
