About Day by De

  • Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world, with 64% of all Zambians living on less than $2 / day (USD). There are few opportunities for economic advancement and, to make matters worse, public schools are not free. Our school farms program helps tackle both these problems by incentivizing children to stay in school and teaching them a skill that can help feed—or even generate extra income for—their family.

  • Many Zambians, including children, are undernourished. Our school farms program directly solves this problem by growing or raising livestock and produce that fits the specific nutritional needs of the community. Furthermore, learning to cultivate and sell agricultural products is a practical life skill that can serve students far beyond the classroom, whether as a means to feed their family or as a much-needed source of income.

  • Our dedicated field staff in Zambia conducts assessments and interviews with school officials, teachers and community members to ensure each site is a good match for our organization. Partner schools are selected based on criteria including: an established nutritional deficit among the student population, the ability to establish a long-term farming project on the property and the level of interest in and the level of motivation among school leaders to effectively execute the project.
